I began by using a 50-year old Speed Grapfic coupled with a ring-light. I shot with Polaroid Type 55, which produces a 4x5 negative and positive. At that point, I merely asked 'Can I take your portrait?' At which point, it became a series. Many of these were shot against a wall in my apartment. Some, were on the road at whatever hotel I happened to be.
